Jenna Talackova

Jenna Talackova is making headlines today after she was disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada competition. Why? Well, she was born male but underwent gender reassignment surgery at 19, but, according to the organization, she does not meet the "requirements to compete."
The statement read that Talackova "did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form," the organization said in a statement. "We do, however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best."

Talackova was apparently one of the 65 finalists chosen to compete in the 2012 pageant. She was then removed from the competition and has slammed the organization on Twitter and since gained publicity about her issue.

"I'm disqualified, however I'm not giving up," she tweeted. "I'm not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination."

Talackova also wrote that she was "disqualified for being born."  People.com reports Talackova was asked whether she regards herself as transgender or as a woman in a 2010 interview and said: "I regard myself as a woman … with a history."

The 23-year-old has identified as female since the age of 4 and began hormone therapy at 14 before undergoing gender reassignment surgery five years later.
