Lipton was born in New York City. Her mother, Rita Hetty Benson (née Rosenberg), was an artist who used her mother's maiden name, Benson, professionally, and her father, Harold Arlen Lipton, was a corporate lawyer.[1] Her paternal grandparents were Russian Jews; her mother was born in Dublin, Ireland, to Jewish parents whose families had immigrated from Eastern Europe (Latvia, which was part of the Russian Empire until the end of WWI).[2][3] Lipton was raised in Lawrence, Nassau County, New York on Long Island with her brothers, Robert, an actor, and Kenneth. She attended Lawrence Junior High School and the Professional Children's School.[4]
From 1974 to 1990, Lipton was married to music industry mogul Quincy Jones, with whom she has two daughters, Rashida Jones, andKidada Jones.
